What we did
Six days at sea carried us 2,610 nautical miles from Luanda, Angola to Praia, Cape Verde. Some days the ocean was quite calm, and we’d spot dolphins floating just under the surface alongside the ship from our deck, an effortless kind of magic you never quite get used to.
On our first full sea day, our stateroom got a bit of an upgrade: new carpet, installed in about four hours. We later learned they have enough carpet to redo around 100 rooms, and somehow we made the list. The ship is over 10 years old and it's amazing how they are constantly upgrading.
Not all of the journey was smooth sailing, though. Amy spent four of the six sea days in quarantine including her birthday; thanks to a gastrointestinal bug making its way around the ship. It turned that stretch into a quieter, more reflective time filled with reading, Sudoku, and small ways to pass the hours. Tom went to a crafts class in Amy's absence and painted a sea turtle.
In the middle of our 6 day voyage, we made a quick stop at Null Island. Null Island is an imaginary island located at the coordinates 0°N 0°E, where the Prime Meridian and the Equator intersect. While it doesn't exist in the physical world, it is one of the most visited places in digital mapping databases. Nothing to actually see there, but the shipped stopped as close as they could get which was pretty cool!
When quarantine ended, we celebrated Amy’s return to the world the best way we knew how: a fun game night with the Curtises, complete with cribbage and Azul; simple moments that felt like a proper victory after a long few days at sea.
