What we did
Luanda, Angola’s coastal capital, is a city in the midst of rapid growth, fueled by its oil driven economy, which is evident in the many construction projects around the port and across the city. We were advised to be especially mindful of the relatively high crime rate, with strict guidance to stick to organized excursions or the designated shopping area served by the ship’s shuttle. With that in mind, we chose to spend the morning onboard before joining a short guided tour in the afternoon. Living conditions vary dramatically, and while some neighborhoods are sleek and modern, the cost of living is striking. Locals told us that a two bedroom apartment can rent for as much as $6,800 a month, reinforcing Luanda’s reputation as one of the world’s most expensive cities for accommodation and imported goods.
Our included city tour took to a church under renovation, although we were not able to go inside or even get a close look, to the Fortress of São Miguel(build 1576), where we were able to walk around and learn some of the country's history, and a brief drive through a resort area with a stop for photos at a memorial; honoring the country’s first president António Agostinho Neto. Our guide was very passionate when talking about his country and their civil war which lasted from 1975 to 2002. It was not the most exciting stop on our journey, but we were still glad we ventured out and experienced a glimpse of the city; learning a little about their history that has helped shape the country into what it is today. As a country still in development, it feels like a destination that may become more rewarding to visit in the years ahead.
