What we did
In the morning, we joined the included tour, which brought us to some of the town’s most notable sights, including the main plaza, the Hercules Tower, and a scenic drive along the waterfront. The Hercules Tower is an ancient Roman lighthouse dating back to the 1st century and is considered the oldest functioning lighthouse in the world and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After the organized portion ended, we decided to explore on our own.

It happened to be the first of May, a major bank holiday known locally as Labor Day, so many of the shops were closed. Even so, the streets were lively, with plenty of people out enjoying the day. We also came across a peaceful, organized march that added to the atmosphere.

The city is wonderfully walkable, and we loved wandering along its narrow cobblestoned streets. Eventually, we found a small restaurant serving tapas, where we enjoyed some Spanish favorites such as Tinto de Verano (red wine with lemon soda, similar to sangria), croquetas, tortilla, and albondigas (Spanish meatballs). It was a delicious break in our day.

After lunch, we continued exploring and discovered Jardines de Méndez Núñeza, a charming park by the water. It was filled with beautiful flowers, including a rose garden, a flower clock, and even the date carefully displayed in plants, making it a memorable spot to end the afternoon.

For dinner, we shared a meal with Cindy and Miles at Manfreddis. They were the first passengers we met, as we happened to be seated in the same row on our flight to Los Angeles and they recognized the Viking tags on our luggage. It felt especially meaningful to reconnect with them, a full circle moment as our magnificent four month adventure begins to draw to a close.
