What we did
Today we did the included excursion titled “Highlights of Langkawi;” a relaxed excursion that gave us a taste of the island’s culture and scenery. Much of the journey was spent on a comfortable, air‑conditioned bus, but the stops were well worth it.

Our first visit was to Laman Padi, the "Rice Garden Museum", where we learned about the rice cultivation process from start to finish. Tom even tried his hand at the traditional thrashing method; separating grains from the stalks by hand. This gave us a real appreciation for the labor behind this staple food. There was also a small museum there where we saw many of the ancient tools that were used to cultivate rice before technology/machinery was introduced in the 1980s.

Next, we stopped at Eagle Square located in Dataran Lang, which is home to the island’s iconic 12‑meter eagle statue. The eagle represents Langkawi’s name itself: “helang” meaning eagle and “kawi” referring to a reddish‑brown hue. It’s a striking landmark and a perfect photo spot.

We also made a quick stop along the beach, where the sea breeze and views offered a refreshing pause before heading back. The walk back to the ship was long but we were rewarded for our efforts as we saw a large group of monkeys (at least 30) running along the shore before ducking back into the woods.

Overall, the tour was a pleasant way to spend the day; informative, scenic, and culturally enriching. We came away with a deeper understanding of rice cultivation and a glimpse into Langkawi’s heritage.
