What we did
We started our day in Wellington with a Shuttle ride to downtown. We were dropped off near the Parliament building (Known as the Beehive). We walked downtown and took the Cable car which was a 5-minute ride from the heart of the city centre, up through the hillside terraced houses of Kelburn, to the lookout perched high above the city. After taking in the views, we took in the Botanical garden and took a hour walk back down the mountain enjoying the sights. A quick trip back to the ship to refresh before we headed out on or afternoon tour that took us to tongue point on the other side of the island to see fur seals. This turned out to be a wonderful trip. We boarded a 10 person 4x4 van. We proceeded out of the city and had special access to a 13,000 acre farm with "road" access to the Tongue point. There were 4 different roads, semi , paved, stone, dirt and other. Tom found the ride very enjoyable, Amy was not as fond of it. We both agreed that the views over the mountains were spectacular. We had to stop for cattle on the narrow mountain roads a few times. Once we reached the coast we were greeted with a beautiful coastline and a number of seals sunning themselves on the rocky shore. We were allowed to get within 50-60 feet of them and got some great photos. The ride back was just as good as in and a stop overlooking the city for pictures was included.
