What we did
Our trek to London started Sunday morning by renting a car so we could drive to JFK airport. The weather was terrible in Connecticut and it took us nearly 4 hours to slog through the rain and traffic. But, we made it! We then checked into the TWA hotel in Terminal 5 at JFK. Immediately we got the sense of being back in the early 70s; there were old travel posters, vintage cars, the history of stewxardess uniforms and bits of memorabilia that really gave the place a retro feel. After checking in, we grabbed a quick bite in their food hall before catching some z’s. In the morning we woke up and checked in with JetBlue which flies out of terminal 5.

We had an 8:45am flight, a first for us, flying during the day to England as opposed to overnight. The flight was smooth and we arrived by 8:45pm. We decided to check into a hotel near the airport as it was late. The next morning, we looked around for a local place to eat and found a little place called Darya Cafe that does quick, made-to-order breakfasts. It was delish, complete with English sausages. We sat at one of the two tables they had as planes flew overhead on their descent to Heathrow. We then relaxed in our hotel room until check out time (noon) and walked about .3 miles to the train station and took the “tube” into London.

We’ll be staying at the Doubletree by Hilton Angel Kings Cross for four nights. The benefit of this location is that we are really close to two train stations (King’s Cross and Angel). We arrived at 1:30 and our room wasn’t ready so we left our luggage and headed down to King’s Cross where we had afternoon tea at Hansom’s. Hansom’s takes its name from the Victorian-era hansom cab, a 2 wheel horse-drawn carriage/taxi invented by Joseph Hansom in the 1830s. Hansom’s is located where the carriages would arrive at the upscale hotel. Service was slow but the cakes surpassed our expectations. We decided to head back to our hotel and relax, forgoing any thoughts of dinner.
